Default Any idea why the fuel economy ratings are so different between 2013 and 2014?

I'm looking at upgrading my 2010 2.0T to a 2013 or 2014 3.8 GT so I have been on the various Hyundai sites quite a bit recently.

Check out either of the following two sites:
www.hyundaicanada.com
www.calgaryhyundai.ca
and use their build and price option.

I've opened a tab for each of the 2013 and 2014 options. Flip between the two of them and pay attention to the fuel economy for each trim level. It's really the only thing different in their Trim Detail section.

For the 3.8 GT Manual:
2013 - City (MT) 11.0L/100km, Highway (MT) 7.3L/100km, Combined (MT) 9.6L/100km
2014 - City (MT) 13.5L/100km, Highway (MT) 8.8L/100km, Combined (MT) 11.4L/100km

This isn't limited to just the 3.8, but it was the one I noticed first.

Any idea why these ratings have changed so drastically? Have Canadian standards changed at all?

I'm assuming this is just a standards change. Any ideas on what else may have changed between 2013 and 2014? Why would I want to pay more for a 2014?

There shouldn't be any difference in the 2014... Could this be more related to how they report and advertise mileage? Not sure but that would be my guess. The 2014 is basically the same car.

Just curious though, with the new coupe likely 1 year or less away why would you go for the 2013/2014 model now?

That's a good question javaman.
I didn't realize the new one was coming out so soon. Are there many expected changes coming?

That's actually pretty bad for an M/T.

I'm averaging 15L/100km all-city on my 2012 A/T.

I wonder if this is related to how Hyundai got busted for fudging EPA numbers and that's why they're less "conservative" with their mileage now.

Either way, it's weird when you see a 2014 Mustang report as 10L/100km for city driving.

They did this to reflect their false EPA consumption reports as many of you may have heard. They got in alot of trouble and had to report a more realistic fuel consumption report for the new cars so that new customers are aware. The standards havent changed, its just Hyundai was forced to make a more accurate report.

The 13-14 are the same car with minor changes and none of which has anything to do with fuel consumption. They did go a little overboard with the new report as many will get better then advertised though.

Most likely. While the Genesis Coupes weren't even included on the list of vehicles whose owners were to be reimbursed, Hyundai still probably felt it was a good idea to update the EPA rating on it to prevent another class action lawsuit.

^ that's why I'm excited to get my 19T in.

But since it's just a modified 13T it might not improve that much *chuckle*
